This is a faster, more accessible version of the ice pack technique. When panic hits hard and you need something immediate, cold water on your face can jolt your system out of the spiral. It is abrupt but effective.
It works similarly to the ice pack method. The cold water on your face, especially around your eyes and cheeks, triggers the mammalian dive reflex. This reflex automatically slows your heart rate and signals your nervous system to calm down. The shock of the cold also forces your attention away from your thoughts and onto a strong physical sensation.
How to do it:
- Go to a sink and turn on the cold water
- Cup your hands and bring the cold water to your face. Splash it over your eyes, your cheeks, and your forehead.
- Do this several times. Let the water run down your face and neck.
- Hold your breath for a moment while the water is on your face, as if you were going underwater. This completes the reflex.
- Step back and take a slow breath. Notice how the cold feels on your skin. Notice if your heart feels different.
- Repeat if you need to. You can do this as many times as you want.
This is a sharp reset. It is not meant to be pleasant, just effective. The cold does not last long, but the effect can carry you through the worst of the wave.
